3. Overlaid Caption: Tom Rocks Maths asks Professor David J. Malan what makes him feel old 🤔 Subtitles: TOM: What is something that makes you feel old? DAVID: Oh, so a lot of pop culture things, especially in a teaching context. Like, for years I was in the habit of using Seinfeld references, which is a very popular American, funny TV show. But drifting, I guess, out of date, recollection. I have been, for the past few years, using The Office, because The Office, especially online, has continued to be popular among kids today. We've recently switched to using Nintendo characters, which have kind of been around now for decades and keep kind of getting refreshed in some way. So that's been helpful. But it's whenever I make a comment like that about some show that some students don't get, that I do feel old. And, in fact, this sort of canonical demonstration that we do in CS50 is when, in a discussion of binary search, which it means searching efficiently by dividing a problem in half again and again. And for this we've used, for 17 years, a phone book. And I think we hit the point a year ago where someone online asked, what is that he's holding? And… TOM: What is a phone book? DAVID: That made me feel old.
